How to Spend an Adventurous Winter Weekend in Sweetwater County

Top 5 Winter Adventures

Why settle for a regular winter vacation when you can go on an outdoor adventure? The natural beauty of Southwest Wyoming in the snowy season seems to bring out sense of adventure in almost everyone who visits. So to help you explore our county, here are our top five ways to have an adventurous winter weekend in Sweetwater County:

1. Blaze a Trail on Cross-Country Skis or Snowshoes

The wagon wheel ruts that are carved into Sweetwater County’s pioneer trails may be blanketed with snow in the winter, but with a pair of cross-country skis or snowshoes, you can blaze your own trails. The parks in Green River and Rock Springs are perfect for shorter treks, and for more epic adventures, head to Flaming Gorge Country, where more than 200 miles of trails await cross-country skiers and snowshoers.

2. Go Ice Fishing

Some of the best fishing in Sweetwater County happens after the county’s waters freeze over. From mid-December until spring, the Fontenelle Reservoir, the Big Sandy Reservoir and especially the Flaming Gorge Reservoir offer anglers ample opportunities to reel in trout and burbot. And since anglers are allowed to drop up to six lines each, you’re bound to have some memorable (and true!) fish stories to tell.

Be sure to check the ice conditions before you go!

3. Take a Scenic Drive

Our wide-open spaces make for some sweeping views, especially from the road. And depending on the weather (and your vehicle), many of our scenic byways and drives are accessible in the winter. Just check the weather before you head out and make sure your car is prepared for the season.

4. Explore Flaming Gorge Country

The gorgeous red sandstone cliffs that line the Flaming Gorge Reservoir only become more beautiful when snow covers the top of the buttes above. To really appreciate what Flaming Gorge Country has to offer in the winter, drive around the lake, stop at some of the breathtaking scenic outlooks, explore the Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area on skis or snowshoes and check out our guide to making a weekend of it.

5. Enjoy Adventerous Events

Supplement your outdoor adventure with heart-pumping indoor events! Adrenaline-racing fun can also be had at the Sweetwater Events Complex & Speedway all year round. BMX enthusiasts five and older are invited to pedal it out against other riders all season on the events complex’s race track. And if you’re a cowboy or cowgirl, you can show off your skills in our winter rodeo. Are you more of a spectator? That’s fine, too. These two sports are just as thrilling to watch.
