Southwest Wyoming Hosts Runs, Rodeos and More

Sweetwater County, Wyo.Sweetwater County Travel and Tourism in southwest Wyoming today announced the dates of its signature summer events. From family-friendly to zany here’s what’s in store this summer in Sweetwater County. For a complete line-up check out the Sweetwater County Events Calendar.

June 5-6: Overland Stage Stampede Rodeo, Green River Rodeo Arena
Visitors can unleash their inner cowboy or cowgirl at this event that features broncs, barrels and bulls. Tickets are a reasonable $10 for adults and $5 for children.

June 25-27: Flaming Gorge Days, Expedition Island, Green River
As part of "Southwest Wyoming's Weekend of Fun," which kicks off the summer season, Flaming Gorge Days provides two nights of concerts. On Friday night country bands Blackjack & Love and Theft take the stage, while Saturday night features rockers Thousand Foot Krutch and Black Stone Cherry. Other activities include three-on-three basketball, four-on-four volleyball, a dodgeball tournament, a festival in the park, a golf tournament, horseshoes and a parade.

July 12-18: National High School Finals Rodeo, Sweetwater Events Complex, Rock Springs
Cheer on more than 1,500 competitors from 41 U.S. states and five provinces in Canada and Australia for the National High School Finals Rodeo. This event is the largest rodeo in the world with 13 performances over seven days. Attendance for the 13 performances is expected to top 100,000, so don’t delay in getting tickets, which are available at the NHSFR Ticket Outlet

July 23-25: Red Desert Roundup Rodeo, Sweetwater Events Complex, Rock Springs
It is a family affair at this event at the Sweetwater County Events Complex. Cowboy competitions include bull riding, team roping, steer wrestling, wild horse races, cowgirls’ barrel racing, saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping and bareback riding.

July 26-August 2: Wyoming’s Big Show – the Sweetwater County Fair, Sweetwater Events Complex, Rock Springs
Each summer, Wyoming's Big Show draws folks from hundreds of miles to Sweetwater County. The Big Show delivers on fun with rodeo action, family-friendly carnival rides, a wide variety of delicious dining options, evening concerts (Martina McBride opens this year’s fair and the Eli Young Band will be the closer), and 4-H and livestock exhibits.

August 8 – Sweetwater Blues N’ Brews – Bunning Park, Rock Springs
Enjoy beers and blues music from around the region, for an affordable price – just $5/ticket. Beer tickets are an additional $5 each, 5 for $20, or buy the commemorative pint glass for $20 and get three beer tickets.

August 14-15 – River Festival – Expedition Island, Green River
This fun-for-all-ages festival features a Cajun shrimp boil, a duck race, free kids games, 12th Annual Run with the Horses marathon, a river walk, microbrew garden, goods and food vendors, dog fetching competitions, dog show, car show and fireworks!  

August 15 – Run with the Horses Marathon – Expedition Island, Green River
Part of the River Festival, this marathon, half marathon and 10k offers a rare chance for runners to make tracks with the wild horse herds in Sweetwater County. Registration is now open at https://www.runnercard.com/roadrace/public/raceGroup/975304.

August 21-25 – Sweetwater Downs Horse Racing – Sweetwater Events Complex, Rock Springs
This event brings pari-mutuel horse races to the Sweetwater Events Complex. Featuring horses from all over the western United States, the races spotlight horses, which are such an iconic part of Wyoming’s western heritage.

August 29 – Race on the Rock – Western Wyoming Community College, Rock Springs
This swim-bike-run event, offering Olympic and spring distances, starts on the campus of the Western Wyoming Community College and continues along the base of White Mountain and through portions of the former mining town of Rock Springs. This is a high-altitude event, which is held at an elevation of about 6,300 feet. For those not used to performing at altitude, it’s recommended you arrive a day or two early to acclimate.
