Nearly Eclipsed Itinerary

Make Rock Springs or Green River, Wyoming your basecamp to the Total Solar Eclipse on August 21st, 2017! Review planning and safety information here.

Prior to viewing this spectacular sight, take in Historic Downtown Rock Springs, enjoy Mountain Biking near Wild Horses, Lake Flaming Gorge, River Festival, Art on the Green, Race on the Rock Triathlon and Live Horse Racing! This is sure to be a weekend you’ll never forget!

Where to Stay - RV Parks, Hotels, and More

Sweetwater Events Complex RV ParkSweetwater County is home to a variety of lodging from hotels, Guest Ranches, Inns, Campsites and RV Parks.

Check out 1,200 RV spaces all with 50 amp service and full hook-ups at Sweetwater Events Complex:

The spaces are located within three separate campgrounds:     

  • Boar's Tusk Campground    
  • Pilot Butte Campground    
  • White Mountain Campground

The campgrounds also feature restroom/shower facilities. We encourage you to book your RV Park, Campsite or other lodging option early to make sure you don't miss this event!

Friday, August 18th

 8:00 a.m. Enjoy coffee and browsing at Java Peddler/The Bike and Trike in Rock Springs .

9:00 a.m. Rent a bike at Bike and Trike & explore Downtown Rock Springs, or take your rented Mountain Bike and head up to the Pilot Butte Wild Horse Loop to ride on incredible trails and enjoy the view!

1:30 p.m. Head back to Bike and Trike to return your bike and enjoy a juicy burger and a special occasion brew at Bitter Creek Brewing next door!  Bitter Creek Brewing will be serving up a very momentous "Eclipse Beer" for this historic event. Wanna find out the type of beer the "Eclipse Beer" will be? Well, you will have to make sure you visit Bitter Creek Brewing this August to taste this unique pint.

2:30 p.m. After lunch, walk down the street to the Rock Springs Historical Museum and take the Historic Downtown Walking Tour.

4:30 p.m. Head back to your RV Park, hotel or campsite to rest and freshen up for dinner.

6:00 p.m. Enjoy dinner at one of many fine-dining establishments in Rock Springs.

Saturday, August 19th

6:00 a.m. If you're an athlete, start your day early, and compete in the Race on the Rock Triathlon in Rock Springs. The event takes place from 6:00 a.m. through about noon, so you'll still be able to choose some of the activities listed below to enjoy after the race!

9:00 a.m.  If you enjoy sleeping in a bit more, start a bit later, and grab some homemade baked oatmeal and coffee at Get Real Coffee in Green River.

10:00 a.m. Learn about the Green River while strolling along the Greenbelt Pathway to enjoy the beautiful weather in the morning.

11:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. Head to Evers Park in Green River to take in the 15th Annual River Festival & Art on the Green:

  • Dog Fetching Competition (11:00 a.m.)
  • Car and Bike Show (11:00am - 4:00 p.m.)
  • Micro Brew Gardens (11:00am - 4:00 p.m.)
  • Live music (12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)
  • Dog Show (1:00 p.m.)
  • Food Vendors
  • Art on the Green Competition (9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) 

6:00 p.m. Enjoy dinner at one of many fine-dining establishments in Green River.

Sunday, August 20th

9:00 a.m. Enjoy breakfast at the Open Range Restaurant at the Best Western Outlaw Inn in Rock Springs or the Hitching Post Restaurant in Green River.

11:00 a.m.  Enjoy some retail therapy at the White Mountain Mall in Rock Springs, or spend late morning on a drive out to the Wild Horse Viewing Area in Rock Springs.

12:00 p.m.  Depart for the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs for horse racing!

1:30 p.m.  Place your bets at Sweetwater Downs Horse Racing.

6:00 p.m.  Enjoy dinner at one of many fine-dining establishments in Rock Springs.

Monday, August 21st

8:00 a.m.  Depart for your day trip from Sweetwater County north into the path of totality. Alternatively, stick around town and visit the Sweetwater Events Complex in Rock Springs to attend a "Solar Party" educational event from 8:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. Enjoy a planetarium display, children's activities, breakfast, and more!

10:17 a.m. Eyes to the sky! The partial solar eclipse begins.

11:38 a.m.  Total Solar Eclipse occurs. This once-in-a-lifetime sight is spectacular.

12:30 p.m. Head back to Sweetwater County from the path of totality. This drive should take roughly 2 hours back to your basecamp.

3:00 p.m. Arrive back in Sweetwater County and head to downtown Rock Springs to explore the Rock Springs Historical Museum. Discover Rocks Springs rich cultural history via the regularly rotating exhibits that showcase the town’s proud heritage.

5:30 p.m.  Have some dinner at one of many fine-dining establishments in Rock Springs or Green River.

Depart Sweetwater County with fond memories! While the Eclipse was a once in a lifetime event, plan to come back next summer for the River Festival, Race on the Rock & Sweetwater Downs Horse Racing, and to spend more time at the Flaming Gorge. Or plan to take in the biggest rodeo in the world at the National High School Finals Rodeo held in Rock Springs July 2018 & 2019!
