Event Description

Western Wyoming Community College will be hosting a Scottish Ceilidh and Burns Night Celebration in the Atrium from 4:30PM to 7:30PM Saturday, January 27th, 2018.

Traditionally, a Scottish Ceilidh is a social gathering which involves Gaelic folk music, dancing, storytelling and poetry, either at someone’s home, large concert hall, or community gathering place. Ceilidhs used to facilitate courting and prospects of marriage, and are still and important and popular social outlet in rural parts of Ireland and Scotland, particularly in the Gaelic-speaking regions. In modern times, clubs, sports clubs, schools, universities and sometimes employers will host a few, or at least an annual Ceilidh.

Burns Night is on January 25th, when Scotland and Scots all over the world come together to celebrate the life of their national poet, Robert Burns, on his birthday. Burns was born in Ayrshire in 1759 and his poetry is a testament to the proud literary heritage of Scotland. All around the world, tributes to Robert Burns are held through a ritual called a Burns Supper.

Expect an evening of music, dancing, food, and poetry with fun for all ages. Sandy Brown, engineering professor at WWCC, hailing from Scotland, will be teaching the attendees some simple traditional Scottish dances, as well.

The event is sponsored by Western Wyoming Community College, Sweetwater BOCES, Western’s Performing Arts Department and WWCC Cultural Affairs. The celebration is free and open to the public. The community is invited, and encouraged to attend.
