Event Description

The work of Wideyed photographers focuses on agricultural shows in England, displayed at Western Wyoming Community College's Art Gallery from March 4th through April 18th, 2019.

Agri[Culture] is the work of Wideye photographers Lucy Carolan, Richard Glynn, Louise Taylor, and Nat Wilkins, which focusses on the annual agricultural shows taking place along the hills and dales of the Tees and Wear Rivers, in the North Pennines area of England where they live. The exhibit provides a snapshot within what may be a continuum or record of something about to evolve beyond recognition, and perhaps, disappear.

While agriculture shows will likely be unaffected by the UK’s decision to leave the European Union, the future of British farming is highly uncertain. Farming is business, but for the farmers who attend shows to compete, their livestock are a source of pride. The competitors show off their breeding and husbandry expertise, quality and character – skills passed down over many generations. The craft has created a specific type of culture amongst the rural communities who come together to uphold their traditions.

Wideyed was founded over a decade ago, and its members have received numerous awards and bursaries, undertaken artist residencies, worked on commission, exhibited from England to South Africa, and now even in Rock Springs, Wyoming.

“It is not only the content of the Wideyed photographic presentations that are intriguing but the non -traditional presentations that differ from sight to sight. As a collective of photographers, Wideyed takes a common theme and works in a very cohesive manner to achieve a statement and presentation.” According to Gallery Director Florence McEwin.
