Jan. 22-24 – Burbot Bash (Jan. 22-24)

The 6th annual Burbot Bash is hosted by the Flaming Gorge Chamber of Commerce. This burbot-only fishing tournament was started in 2011 to help remove the invasive, aggressive eel-like species – also known as ling cod or eelpout – from the reservoir. Individuals or teams of two to four anglers compete for over $10,000 in cash and prizes. There will be a new prize category this year for participants who compete in both the Burbot Classic and Burbot Bash tournaments. Visit www.burbotbash.comfor rules and registration.

Jan. 29-31 – Buckboard Burbot Classic

Hosted by Buckboard Marina, anglers compete in this fishing derby in youth and adult prize categories, including tagged burbot, biggest burbot, smallest burbot and more. Though not an attractive fish – its slimy, eel-like body and goatee-like barbel also earned it the nickname “Lawyer Fish” – it has been sought after for many centuries in Europe as a delicacy and has been call the poor man’s lobster. Up to 40 people will win prizes, and all have the chance to take home as much of this tasty fish (which is also called poor man’s lobster!) as possible. New this year, there will also be an auger contest. Visit buckboardmarina.com to sign up.

Feb. 12-13 – Crystal Classic

In the town of Green River, the 2016 Crystal Classic Winter Festival will once again transform Expedition Island into a winter wonderland of exquisitely sculpted ice, lights, music and decorations. This National Ice Carving Association-sanctioned competition offers a prize purse totaling $12,000 for professionals and amateurs from all over the U.S and Canada. The weekend of winter family fun also features food vendors, live music, a 5k walk/run, snow boot softball, s’mores station, soup cook-off, horseshoe competition and more.
