5 Safety Tips for Winter Road Tripping

Plan Your Cold-Weather Adventures in Southwest Wyoming

Snow-covered landscapes make winter in Southwest Wyoming a magical place to be. Whether you’re taking a winter road trip through Rock Springs and Green River on your way to one of the West’s most beloved national parks, or traveling through on your way to a ski destination for spring break, Sweetwater County has five safety tips for winter driving you should keep in mind.

1. Watch the Weather

Rock Springs and Green River have an average of 244 days of sunshine per year, but wintertime means the possibility for snow and ice. Check weather reports regularly to ensure you are prepared for whatever Mother Nature has in store.

2. Stock the Vehicle

Sand or kitty litter can help you out of a slick spot. Other must-haves include blankets, water, non-perishable food, a flashlight, a first-aid kit and an ice scraper.

3. Slow Down

Winter driving conditions can be unpredictable. Drive more slowly than normal, and keep more distance between you and the vehicles in front of you to give yourself ample reaction time. Also, avoid using cruise control when driving on any wet, slippery surface.

4. Keep the Vehicle Fueled

In the wintertime half a tank is considered “empty” since that’s the point at which fuel can freeze in the gas line.

5. Stay With Your Vehicle

If your car breaks down or you get stuck in the snow, don’t leave your vehicle. Not only is it easy to become disoriented and lose sight of your automobile in snowy weather, it is also easier for rescuers to locate you inside your car.
