Grant Information
**** 2% Lodging Tax Funds the Travel and Tourism Board Grants
Election: November 2, 2010
2% Lodging Tax
An unsung hero for Sweetwater County is on the ballot this November 2nd. It helps bring in more than $185 million each year, provides over 1,900 jobs, and contributes millions in taxes. Yet the hero does NOT cost you or me one cent.
The hero is the Sweetwater County 2% lodging tax. This tax is paid by visitors who stay overnight in our hotels, bed & breakfasts, and campgrounds. No local residents pay this tax unless they stay in our lodging establishments.
Is this a New Tax?
No. The lodging tax was first approved by Sweetwater County voters in 1991 and has been renewed four times since.
What is the Purpose of the Tax?
The Sweetwater County Joint Travel and Tourism Board uses the funds to develop tourism and enhance the local economy by bringing visitors to the area that will stay in the local hotels & RV parks, eat at local restaurants and shop at local retailers. To do so, the board purchases advertising, provides funding to over 50 local events that draw out of county attendance, provides funding to maintain the Rock Springs and Green River visitor centers, supports marketing efforts at the Sweetwater Events Complex and works to recruit conventions and sporting events to the area.
How is the Tax Used?
The Sweetwater County Joint Travel and Tourism Board administers the 2% Lodging Tax in the following way:
- 20% Event Grants
- 52% Out-of-County Marketing Campaign
- 4% Chamber Grants
- 7% Events Complex Grant
- 7% Tourism Related Projects
- 10% Administration
