History of Sweetwater County

History
FACT: The “Oregon Trail” in Sweetwater County (and much of Wyoming) is actually four National Historic Trails in one corridor— Oregon, Mormon Pioneer, California and Pony Express.

Sweetwater County is the perfect place to explore American history. Petroglyphs on White Mountain preserve the pictorial language of the prehistoric people from our region. Also, still carved into the earth are the wagon wheel ruts of the pioneer trails. Find out much more about the rich history and unforgettable treasurers left behind.

Rock Springs Historical Museum Fact: The museum itself was built in 1894 and first used as the City Hall. The building is the museum’s largest artifact. The building is the museum’s largest artifact.

Fossil Fact: Some of the floral and fish fossils date from about 45 million years ago.

Historic Trail Fact: Sweetwater County has more miles of still-visible pioneer trails than any other area in the United States.
