Green
River City Government
50 E 2nd North
Green River, WY
(307) 872-0500
As one travels east along Interstate 80, the wide open
spaces of southwestern Wyoming are suddenly interrupted by a series of
multi-colored buttes, carved over time by the Green River. The varied
sizes, shapes, and shades of the eroding strata provide a majestic
setting for the city of Green River.
Incorporated in 1868, in what was then Dakota
Territory, and named for the swift flowing greenish river that courses
through town, the City of Green River has a long and varied history.
Today, Green River’s population is approximately 14,000. The railroad
is still a major presence. Mining, particularly of trona, is the major
industry in the area. Even with the Interstate, the railroad, and other
trappings of modern society, the city continues to sit at the crossroads
of the west—a timeless, peaceful place.

Rock
Springs City Government
212 D Street
Rock Springs, WY
(307) 352-1500 Rock Springs is home to 56 Nationalities; a true
melting pot. Formed by the railroad and coal mines in the past
century, Rock Springs offers a variety of recreational opportunities for
visitors and residents alike. Rock Springs is in the
southwest corner of Wyoming, located in Sweetwater County. Established
in 1888 as a mining town, the natural resources around the area are the
driving force behind the Rock Springs economy. Western Wyoming Community
College has its main campus in Rock Springs which attracts students from
around the globe. The population of Rock Springs is 18,708 (2000
census). Outside the town, recreation areas such as Flaming Gorge
National Recreation Area and the Killpecker Sand Dunes
provide year-round enjoyment. South of town, Flaming Gorge Lake, fed by
the Green River, has 375 miles of shoreline that ranges from low flats
to towering cliffs 1500 feet high. The National Recreation Area around
the lake is a flaming landscape -- the sun playing off the sculpted rock
formations offering a kaleidoscope of vivid colors. The Sand Dunes, just
a few miles north of Rock Springs, are the largest in North America. As
you approach modern-day Rock Springs, you can almost imagine earlier
travelers bouncing along the Overland Stage Route toward the welcome
stage station that was the beginning of the town in 1862. Rock Springs
is another of the southern Wyoming towns on the Union Pacific's
transcontinental line. For years the area provided millions of tons of
coal to feed the nation's locomotives. Today, the Rock Springs area
continues to have a leadership role in the nation's energy production.

a sense of 1890's Rock Springs' pride at its growth and survival along
the major East-West corridor. Our history covers cowboys, outlaws,
railroading, ethnic diversity, labor issues and, underneath it all,
coal. Coal brought the Union Pacific Railroad, which, in turn,
imported a great variety of workers.

Free Admission
Open Monday-Saturday, 10am to 6pm
(Closed holidays)
Discover the rich cultural heritage of southwestern Wyoming at the Sweetwater County Historical Museum. Established in 1967 to preserve and present the history of Sweetwater County, the museum recently moved into a renovated 1931 post office building. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. The museum contains long and short-term exhibits, a large historical photograph collection and local history materials.
The museum collects items representing the history of Sweetwater County from 1820 to the present. Native American and fur trade history, mining, transportation, communication, civic and economic development and ethnic diversity are major themes for both collection and exhibit. A distinctive group of artifacts is a series of Sioux ledger art pieces dating from around the turn of the century. Other unique items include a number of Chinese objects from the community of Chinese miners in Rock Springs, and a large collection of coal mining artifacts from the Union Pacific Coal Company. An important recent acquisition is a Sharps buffalo rifle owned by
W.A. Johnson, a Green River pioneer and Sweetwater County Sheriff. Many of these pieces are on display in the museum gallery.
The museum’s collection of research materials and photographs are particularly strong in the areas of local history, coal mining and ethnic groups. A highlight of the photo collection is a selection of views showing the now-deserted mining towns of Dines, Winton, E-Plane, Gunn and others in their heyday.
The museum administers a unique historic property, the Reliance Tipple, which is one of the few industrial sites preserved in Wyoming. Historically used to sort and load coal, the tipple was restored and fenced for protection in the late 1980s. A walking path and interpretive signs are installed around the perimeter to present the story of the tipple and coal mining. The site is located about five miles north of Rock Springs off Highway 191 North.
The Museum Store carries an extensive line of historical books and gift items. All profits from the store benefit the museum and the Sweetwater County Historical Society.
